Why I Started Sullivan Counseling Services (And What I Wish More People Knew About Anxiety!)
If you've ever found yourself thinking, "Why am I reacting this way?" or "I know what I should do, so why is it so hard?" you're not alone.
One of the things I hear most often from clients is some version of, "I don't understand why this keeps happening."
Maybe it's anxiety that won't let go, even when everything seems great.
Maybe it's perfectionism that makes it difficult to rest, enjoy accomplishments, or feel like you've done enough.
Maybe it's overthinking every possible scenario or replaying a small interaction in your mind for hours afterward.
Or maybe it's watchingyour child struggle with these things and wishing you knew how to help.
As a therapist, I've learned that people are often much harder on themselves than they need to be. When we don't understand our emotions, behaviors, or reactions, it's easy to assume something is wrong with us. In reality, many of the patterns we struggle with make perfect sense when we understand the story behind them.
That's one of the reasons I started Sullivan Counseling Services!
Understanding Before Changing
First, I believe meaningful change starts with understanding.
Many people come to therapy hoping to "fix" a problem. While therapy can absolutely help reduce symptoms and improve daily life, I often find that lasting change happens when we first become curious.
How have your lived experiences shaped the way you move through the world?
Why does anxiety show up in certain situations?
What purpose might a behavior be serving?
What is your nervous system trying to communicate?
When we begin asking these questions, our struggles often become less confusing and less shameful. Instead of fighting ourselves, we can start working with ourselves instead.
Anxiety Is More Than Worry
Although I work with a variety of concerns, anxiety is one of the most common reasons people seek therapy. Many people think anxiety is simply worrying too much. In reality, anxiety can show up in many different ways:
Overthinking and second-guessing
Perfectionism and fear of mistakes
Difficulty relaxing
A low-grade, constant sense of irritability or frustration
Trouble sleeping
Avoidance of challenging situations
Physical symptoms such as headaches, stomachaches, or muscle tension
For children, anxiety often looks different than adults expect. Instead of saying, "I'm anxious," a child might become clingy, avoid school, complain of stomachaches, seek constant reassurance, or have emotional outbursts.
When we understand what anxiety looks like beneath the surface, we can respond more effectively and compassionately.
My Approach to Therapy
My approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in evidence-based practices.
Whether I'm working with a child, teen, adult, or an athlete, my goal is to create a space where people feel safe enough to be honest about what they're experiencing and supported enough to grow.
Together, we work to:
Understand your emotions and behavior patterns
Build healthy coping skills
Strengthen emotional resilience
Improve confidence and self-understanding
Navigate challenges with greater flexibility and self-compassion
I draw from approaches including play therapy, mindfulness, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), narrative therapy, and nervous system-informed interventions, always tailoring treatment to the unique needs of each person.
Why This Blog Exists
One of my favorite parts of being a therapist is helping people understand complex ideas in a way that feels practical and meaningful.
Through this blog, I'll be sharing insights about anxiety, emotional health, athletics, parenting, child development, perfectionism, and the challenges that many people quietly carry every day.
I'll also be starting a regular series called Research Thursday, where I'll break down interesting psychology and counseling research into plain language and explore what it means for your real life. My nerdy side loves research, and I can happily disappear down a rabbit hole reading studies for hours! The challenge is that research isn't always easy to understand — or practical to apply in everyday life.
My goal is to bridge that gap by translating complex findings into clear, meaningful takeaways you can actually use. Think of it as: I read the research so you don't have to (but I’ll always link the studies, too!).
